Every Day Poems Prompt: I Learned Opening
Share your family poems with an encouraging community!
I learned opening from my mother
how to open the day with
ritual and quiet
how to open dreams like flowers…
Juniper Klatt creates a small tribute to her parents by poetically expressing what she learned from them.
Come write your own tribute to at least two people in your family by poetically expressing what you’ve learned from them—one stanza for each person.
Just drop your poem into the comment box beneath the Juniper’s poem. We can’t wait to read!

I learned perseverance from my father
how to keep going when you feel you can't
knowing that you are stronger than you feel
he taught by example
I learned much the same from my mother
that persistence that you pull from within
so that you may keep giving to those you love
those who depend on you
I love this prompt. It made me think and feel deep. Here is my "I Learned" poem.
I learned from my mother
that music heals the soul,
that reading feeds the soul.
I learned that education is
important enough
to sacrifice to own it.
I learned from my father
how to tend the pecan trees
so they bear their best in the fall.
That a poor man becomes
rich when he dons the right suit.
I learned that treating people right
is better than getting ahead.
I learned from my grandmother
how to grow sweet corn, when
to harvest and put it up.
That African Violets
are delicate like some people.
I learned that diaries are gems
to be protected and guarded.
I learned from my grandfather
I never knew that life is short,
make it count.
That mill work is dirty and hard.
That leaving behind nine children
during the depression is unjustifiable.
