A Writing Quote to Inspire You
“Try to be one of the people on whom nothing is lost.”
—Henry James, quoted in On Being a Writer
Action Prompt 2
Take note of at least three things today.
Listen to a voice or a new sound; reach out to touch something you might have passed without taking in that tactile sensation; look more closely, even using binoculars or a magnifying glass for a fresh perspective.
Record the three things you noticed. You can use a few words to jog your memory later, or you can write in more detail, to preserve the nuance.
Go further: Do the same thing tomorrow and the next day—notice and capture. All this week, capture at least three things per day. Toward the end of the week, spread out your collection of notes, paste them into a document, transcribe them from audio, or handwrite them into a notebook, and decide which ones grab you. In your journal, freewrite about one. Ten minutes without stopping. Go.
