A Story Quote to Inspire You
“But out of one window, I can see the garden...”
—Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Inspiration Prompt 1
The Yellow Wall-Paper is a story in which one woman struggles to find (keep?) her sanity in a house that is anything but conducive to that effort.
The room she is staying in is especially disheartening. But it has windows from which she can see “mysterious deep-shaded arbors,” “riotous old-fashioned flowers,” and “a bay and a little private wharf,” among other things.
Imagine yourself as not being able to really go anywhere, but you have a window and your creative vision. Write a story or a poem using something you can see just outside your window. Feel free to be as creative as you like. Take a romantic angle. Or a science fiction turn. Try mystery, or horror, or write something transcendent using the form of a haiku or ode.
The 5 inspiration prompts in this mini-series are based on The Yellow Wall-Paper: A Graphic Novel, illustrated by Sara Barkat.
We hope these prompts inspire you with imaginative ideas for stories or poems!
